Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent mental illness among youth, seriously affecting the way students function in school, experience life, and engage in relationships. This workshop will (1) describe different kinds of anxiety disorders and their related risk and protective factors, (2) teach educators how to reduce symptoms of anxiety through mindfulness and intentionality in the classroom, and (3) empower educators to de-escalate panic attacks and crisis situations using grounding techniques. We are excited to host Kyrah Altman, President of LEAD (Let's Empower and Do), an organization founded in 2012 in the wake of the Sandy Hook tragedy. LEAD's purpose is to understand why such tragedies take place and how society can prevent future tragedies from occurring.

As we prepare to make plans for next school year, it is time to start considering salaries. Florida statute requires charter schools to have a performance-based salary schedule. What does this mean? How do we calculate salaries for employees next year, and ensure we are retaining our best staff? Also, for those teachers who are not returning, how do we finalize their payroll? Many school leaders do not understand the complexities which should go into the payroll calculations for their 10-month employees. This webinar, presented by Curtis Fuller of the Charter Support Unit, will explain the math formulas and review salary schedule requirements for Florida Charter Schools.

Special Guest to answer Legal Questions at next week's New School Institute

The Charter Support Unit has been hosting digital meetings for schools who are scheduled to open next year every other week on Tuesday evenings to talk about the various aspects school leaders and governing board members need to think about in order to prepare for a successful opening in August.  Next week, on Tuesday, March 19 at 8:00 pm, we will be joined by attorney Kathleen Schoenberg who will lead a discussion on the most common legal pitfalls charter schools can fall into if they are not careful during the startup phase and first year of operation.  If you would like to learn more or to RSVP please visit https://charter.support/presentation/2019-03-19/.

This is part of our New School Institute training series. You can learn more about the series at https://charter.support/services/nsi/.
