The former way of instructing students using our former standards did not work. With only 53% of students reaching "satisfactory" and not even half of our lowest 25% of students making gains (48% to be exact), as a state - we failed. Something clearly needs to change. Enter: the new B.E.S.T. standards for ELA, based on the science of reading (SOR). The only catch? If we teach (and lead) the way we have always taught (and lead), then we will continue to get the same results. What can we do?
